About us

Attention. Everything is about giving attention. With the utmost attention we guide the plane across the specially chosen beech wood of which we make the frame of our furniture. We lovingly cut and tighten the sheep leather, stitch everything by hand, insert every nail, and patinate the leather with a natural stain. We give our full attention to every detail and you can feel that.

The moment you sit down in one of our handmade sheep leather armchairs you will experience the attention we give to every step in the production process. You can feel the passion for the craftsmanship of making furniture and the quality of the carefully chosen materials. The same attention we have during the creation of the armchair, is the attention you give to yourself. You sit down and enjoy, simply because you can. That is our goal, only then have we done our job. Every step, every bit of attention and every effort has been worthwhile.

That is what we enjoy. We have been enjoying our craftsmanship for over 40 years. It’s in our blood. Creating furniture by hand and completely tailoring it to your wishes is our passion. This is what we live for, day after day. Every day and every hour the people in our workshop are dedicatedly working towards the moment you sit down in your new armchair and simply enjoy.

Why is the sheep leather we use a “green product”?

At Lounge Atelier we solely use top-quality leather from New Zealand and Australia. The sheep get a lot of freedom to graze and grow up to be healthy, strong animals. The sheep are used for the meat industry which makes their skin a residual product. However, by using their skins for our furniture, we make optimal use of the animals. We also try to keep the treatment process as “green” as possible. This means that the tanning is done with pure vegetable oil. Aside from that, the sheep leather is also a fully recyclable material.

What do I need to consider when purchasing a sheep leather armchair?

What do I need to consider when purchasing a sheep leather armchair? Are you considering to buy a vintage sheep leather piece of furniture? Then keep the following advice in mind:

  • Has the leather not crackled too much? Crackles are small cracks which, when not too abundant, add to the “antique” charm of the leather. However, too many crackles make the leather vulnerable.
  • Does the sheep leather armchair has a loose pillow or is the pillow upholstered to the chair? Your preference is of course a matter of taste. However, a loose pillow has the advantage that it’s easier to repair when damaged.
  • Does the seating height match your body? Has the pillow not collapsed too far? This is, of course, important to your seating comfort.
  • Isn’t the leather dried out too much?

Always keep in mind that restoring a used product is often more expensive than the actual value of the furniture.

What are the benefits of sheep’s leather?

Unique character

The main advantage of sheep leather is what you experience when you visit our showroom: its appearance, character and its timeless elegance. Because the leather adjusts to the temperature of its environment, it will never feel cold or sticky when warm. In order to keep the leather supple it’s important to maintain it. This is a simple procedure and ensures that the material has the maximum lifespan. Sheep leather is a rather valuable and soft type of leather which is often used in exclusive furniture due to its unique characteristics. However this does not mean that every sheep leather armchair has an antique appearance. Due to our wide variety of products the Lounge Atelier also has models with tight lining and a modern, contemporary appearance.

100% natural
Advantages also exist in the area of environment and society. Sheep leather is, evidently, a 100% natural product. Our leather comes from New Zealand and Australia where the sheep have a lot of space to graze.

How do I maintain my sheep leather armchair?

Sheep leather is a refined material : a natural product of which the suppleness needs to be protected. That’s why we advise you to maintain your furniture well. Luckily this is very easy:

  • Rub the handrails and seat with special beeswax once every two months. Allow it to soak for about ten minutes and then rub the beeswax out so it’s spread evenly and eventually starts to shine.
  • We advise you to perform the aforementioned process twice a year for the entire piece of furniture.
  • In case your furniture hasn’t been maintained in a long time, we advise you to repeatedly apply a thin layer of beeswax and to rub it out. Keep on doing this until your furniture shines once again.
  • Never treat your sheep leather furniture with water or cleaning products, these will damage the leather as they affect the patina.

We sell our special Lounge Atelier beeswax in cans of 375 ml (€ 16,95), available in the colors light brown, dark brown and “ox”. Contact us to order the beeswax.
